Hot sauce reviewers. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about them? Some people may think they are there for the love of hot sauce, and to share more info about the industry we all love. While others may think they are just there for entertainment and to puke from eating ridiculously spicy food. Let’s not mention the guy who thought it was a good idea to smoke a Carolina Reaper from a bong. Anyway, as an avid consumer of craft hot sauces, I follow a few reputable reviewers to see what their opinion is on a new product. Notice I said “their opinion”, because that’s exactly what it is. Nothing more, nothing less. What I have come to realize is that each reviewer has their own preferences when it comes to spicy foods and hot sauce. Some like more of a vinegar tang while others prefer the vinegar to be hidden. There are some that can eat the spiciest sauce on the planet by the spoonful and still rate it “7 out of 10” for heat with excellent flavor. Whereas most people would run for ice cream and not say anything at all. Good advice for other hot sauce lovers that are constantly looking for new sauces to try, is to take a look at the reviewers out there, see what their favorites are and try and find a trend within that lineup. Does that trend match up with your personal preferences? If not, then move on to the next reviewer. It just wouldn’t make much sense to purchase a “10 out of 10” sauce from a review given by someone who loves vinegar-based sauce, unless you love vinegar-based sauces as well!
The intent here is not to demean any reviewers out there. In fact, I am trying to inform folks on how to properly follow the guidance of these fellow fiery food lovers. A quick way to see if a reviewer is a good fit for you is to see if they have reviewed your favorite sauce. Did they give it a good rating? Then they might be the one for you. Did they say negative things about it? Then you might want to move on to the next person. It’s as easy as that. No need to argue with the reviewers OPINIONS of a sauce.
One last thing. There is a lot of talk about reviewers that “never give bad reviews”. I’m here to tell you that if you watch a reviewer enough, you can tell when they are giving the velvet dagger. In other words, they are giving a bad review but in a nice way. There have also been times where reviewers have refused to review a product at all because it was flat out horrible. Instead of bashing a company publicly, some respectable reviewers will contact the sauce maker directly and voice their opinion. A much better option in my book and a huge help in the long run.
